Strong Diurnal Pulsing of Cold Clouds in Rapidly Intensifying Tropical Cyclones

چکیده

The radially outward propagating diurnal signal in the upper-level clouds (diurnal pulse) is a prominent cyclical feature of tropical cyclones (TCs). This study examines relationships between pulses and TC intensity changes using satellite Infrared data from 2001 to 2018. occurrence duration 24 hr prior or during change are strongly correlated with intensification rate. Rapidly intensifying (RI) TCs have markedly higher frequency (60%–80%) very long-duration pulse (15 hr) significantly longer mean than steady-state (40%–50%) gradually (50%–60%). Long-duration infrequent weakening (20%–30%). Diurnal highly initial cloud-top cooling rate cold-cloud fraction inner core, but less related intensity. In short, strong pulsing cold an evident signature RI TCs.

Clouds in Tropical Cyclones

Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...

Large-Scale Characteristics of Rapidly Intensifying Tropical Cyclones in the North Atlantic Basin

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) databases are employed to examine the large-scale characteristics of rapidly intensifying Atlantic basin tropical cyclones. In this study, rapid intensification (RI) is defined as approximately the 95th percentile of over-water 24-h intensity changes of Atlantic basin tropical cyclones that develop...

The Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation in Tropical Cyclones

Position and intensity data from the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) are combined with global, gridded precipitation estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)Multisatellite PrecipitationAnalysis (TMPA) for the period 1998–2013 to study the diurnal cycle of precipitation in tropical cyclones. The comprehensive global coverage and large sampl...
